About | Phillip Wayne Dodd, Homewood’s retired Chief of Police, passed away on Sunday, the 15th of May, 2022. He was 67 years of age. Chief Dodd was preceded in death by his first wife, Pamela B. Dodd, and by his son, Nathan Dodd. He is survived by his wife, Pamela Nix Dodd; two sons, Jeremy Dodd (Dawn) and Stanley Dodd (Ashleigh); by his daughter, Paige Henderson (Thomas); by his brother, Mike Dodd (Deidre); his sister, Joyce Thompson (Bill); three grandchildren, J.T. Ellison, Brooklyn Henderson, and Bennett Henderson; and by his two nephews, Jason Powell and Tim Powell. A 1972 graduate of Shades Valley High School, Phil studied Leadership Studies at the University of Virginia and Criminal Justice at Faulkner University earning his BS degree in Criminal Justice. Chief Dodd spent his entire law enforcement career with the Homewood Police Department (34 years eight months). In October 1976, Phil joined as a patrol officer. From 1995 until 2003 he served as a Sergeant and Lieutenant in the Patrol Division and Lieutenant of the Detective Division from 2003 until 2007. In November 2007, Phil was promoted to Chief of Police and served the residents of Homewood well. His knowledge of law enforcement, his ability to help those in need, and his desire to help his officers succeed was just a few traits that made him a beloved Chief to those who worked for and served with him. Throughout his career he consistently trained and studied ways of improving himself and the Homewood Police Department. He served as a certified Tactical Firearms Instructor and Advanced Crisis Negotiator. He was certified for Chemical Munitions, Specialty Impact Munitions, Distraction Device Instructor, and Weapons of Mass Destruction Instructor. In 2006, Phil received N.I.M.S. Certification and earned the Commendation Award of Merit, Homicide Investigation and was named the City of Homewood Employee of the Year. Chief Dodd retired in February 2011. Chief Dodd was a graduate of the 189th Session of the FBI National Academy Associates and was a member of the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners, the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, and the Adjunct Instructor for APOSTC Academy. He also served as an Elder of Edgewood Presbyterian Church, was a member of Tannehill Woodcarvers Association, Boy Scouts of America Troop 97, and served as a volunteer for the Children’s Fresh Air Farm. Friends are cordially invited to the visitation and reception on Thursday, the 19th of May, from four o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. Funeral services for Chief Dodd will commence at eleven o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 20th of May, at Ridout’s Valley Chapel. The funeral cortege will immediately follow to Forest Hill Cemetery where graveside services will be conducted with full police honors.
