Robert Howk Obituary

Graduation Year Class of 1972
Date of Passing Jul 05, 2014
About Lifelong Alaskan and inveterate rabble-rouser Robert I. Howk, 60, passed away on July 5, 2014. He is survived by his children, Jennifer Howk and Eric Howk; his brother Murray Howk; his brother-in-law Michael Scibor; his former wife Susan Morgan, and many nieces and nephews. Robert was born on January 1, 1954, to Margaret and Evans Howk in Fairbanks. He was a familiar and pioneering voice in Alaskan media for many years and always an innovative one, from his work as KABN radio's "Voice in the Valley" for Radio Free Big Lake to his time as KSKA's News Director in Anchorage. His irreverent and creative work received a variety of prestigious radio, television, and print press awards. Robert was also a talented musician who first tasted fame on stages in Fairbanks in the 1970s with his band Alaska. His weekly keyboard stylings at Anchorage's Tap Root bar were no less legendary. Robert was, like his brother from another mother Hunter S. Thompson, "too weird to live, and too rare to die." A keen observer of the human condition, gifted communicator, talented musician, and exceptionally complex human, he will be tremendously missed. There will not be a formal service, but celebrations of life will be held both in Anchorage and Fairbanks with details to be announced.
