He was escorting the runners between Tuba City to Window Rock, Arizona. During the escort, he lost control of his motorcycle when it struck a gravel shoulder of Highway 264. He suffered severe injuries in the accident and died. Commander Goldsmith was a US Air Force veteran. He had served with the Apache County Sheriff's Office for 5 years, and had previously served with the Arizona Department of Corrections for 5 years.
