About | Clarice (Metzger) Westlake, age 83, of Redding, CA, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024, surrounded by her family. Clarice lived a life full of love, laughter, and a deep dedication to her family and friends. Clarice grew up across the street from the Bidwell Park One Mile Dam in Chico, where she spent many joyful days. Summers were often spent with family at their summer home in Butte Meadows, creating fond memories that stayed with her throughout her life. She attended Hooker Oak Elementary School and Chico Junior and Senior High Schools, where she met her lifelong love and future husband, Stuart Westlake. The two married on July 4, 1959, celebrating their 65th anniversary this past July. In addition to husband Stuart, she is survived by her children, Mark (Paige), Dave (Linda), and John (Adrianne); eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, whom she adored and spoke of proudly to all. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Phyllis Metzger, and her sister, Carolee (Metzger) Baker. Clarice had a remarkable gift for bringing people together and was the heart of every family gathering, ensuring there was always plenty of love—and food—to go around. Her home was known for its warmth, laughter, and the aroma of her famous chocolate chip cookies, which often sparked playful rivalry among her sons. During the holidays, friends and neighbors looked forward to receiving her homemade peanut brittle, a tradition that showcased her generous spirit. Clarice was also deeply involved in Northern California’s golfing community. Her passion for golf and competitive spirit won her both friends and respect on the green. Clarice was a past president and active member of the Ladies Club at Gold Hills Golf Course. One of her proudest achievements was winning her third title of Redding Ladies City Golf Champion at the age of 52. She and Stuart enjoyed traveling together to the Bahamas, the Hawaiian Islands, and even spent a year-long adventure in Mexico. They also cherished time at their summer home in Lake Almanor and shared a love for sports that took them to a World Series game and a Super Bowl. Clarice will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her zest for life, and the joy she brought to all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, cherished memories, and life lessons from a heart brimming with love that will remain with her family forever. |
