Michael T. Prter Obituary

Graduation Year Class of 1998
Date of Passing Jan 15, 2007
About Bakersfield native Michael T. Porter died on Monday, January 15, 2007, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, victim of a stray bullet. A relatively new member of the United States Navy, Mike was well known and liked in this area through his many activities. The essence of Mike is contained in his own final "My Space" login of January 11, 2007. "Male. 26 years old. Born and raised in East Bakersfield (It sucks to be me!). Graduated from Foothill High School in 1998 and went on to receive an AA from B.C. in 2001. Received a Bachelor of Arts degree from CSU-Bakersfield in 2004. Then spent a year teaching English at Arvin High School (Once a Bear, always a Bear!). Currently in Virginia Beach, Virginia, doing Master- at-Arms 'A' School with the U.S. Navy." Mike is survived by his mother, Daphne K. Porter and his father, Richard R. Porter, both of Bakersfield; and his brothers, Daniel J. Porter, currently a student at CSUB, and Sr. Airman David R. Porter, who is stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, MT. Mike is also survived by his maternal family: grandmother, Hilda A. Ranton of Eureka, California; three aunts, three uncles, and six cousins from all over the country, several of whom will be attending his services. He is also survived by members of his large paternal family: grandmother, Lois Porter of Bakersfield; nine aunts and uncles and numerous cousins who live around the Bakersfield area. Social and personally engaging, Mike enjoyed life, had many friends, and was an excellent writer; he loved playing basketball, following his favorite footballers, the Oakland Raiders, and certainly his long-time "best friend," Rottweiler Machiavelli "Mac". Mike will be missed. Services will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2:00 p.m., under the auspices of Hillcrest Memorial Mortuary at the Monica Ward Building, 851 Monica Rd., Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with the leadership of Bishop Steve Dunne and the U.S. Navy Military Honors led by Navy Chaplain Bishop Ringo. Interment will follow immediately at Hillcrest Cemetery under the leadership of Bishop Ron Beasley. The family expresses its appreciation for your many offers of sympathy and condolence. Gift contributions may be made to the Michael T. Porter Memorial Fund at Arvin High School, 900 Varsity Rd., Arvin. Michael T. Porter July 17, 1980 - Jan. 15, 2007
