About | Rick loved baseball, playing T-Ball, Little League, Pony League, etc. as a young child and later for Glendale High and eventually for the famous Coach John Scolinos at Cal Poly Pomona. He also played football in high school and was particularly good at kicking, earning the moniker "The Golden Toe of Glendale" and a football scholarship at UCLA. Becoming ill while at UCLA and unable to continue playing football, he transferred to Cal Poly Pomona where he starred on the Cal Poly baseball team. It was at Cal Poly that he met his wife Karen in 1968, whom he married in 1975. He signed a professional baseball contract with the San Francisco Giants in spring of 1969 and headed off to a farm team. After that he returned to finish college with honors and go on to graduate school at Iowa State University. |
