About | DORA JEAN FLEMING Former Postmaster and longtime Herlong resident Dora Jean Fleming peacefully passed from this life with her loving daughter at her side, early Wednesday morning, Aug. 27, 2008 at her residence in Herlong. A native of Alva, Okla., born 83 years ago on June 26, 1925 to the late Lester and Lulu (Morreson) Booze, at the age of 8 she and her family relocated to the Northern California valley community of Chico. Dora went on to attend Chico High School. Dora met and later married the love of her life, the late John Jay Fleming, on March 24, 1941 in Reno, Nev., and the newlyweds shortly thereafter moved to Herlong in 1943. Her first priority in life was that of a loving wife and mother who worked hard to always keep her family first. Her professional life consisted of 23 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Postal Service. She was named the Postmaster for the Herlong Post Office in 1980. Dora and her family attended the former Herlong Base Chapel Church. She had a deep commitment to the Order of Eastern Star with membership in the Sierra Star Chapter #129 of Sierraville, Calif., and the Five Star Chapter #51 of Susanville, Calif. She is a Past Worthy Matron as well as a Deputy Grand Matron to Indiana in California. Dora just recently relinquished the duties of President of the Daughters of the Nile due to her health complications and again just recently was honored with her 50-year membership pin with the Order of Eastern Star. Accomplished in all types of crafts, she enjoyed volunteering at the local blood bank as well as helping as a poll worker and registering voters. In passing, Dora leaves her son; Dennis Ray Fleming and wife Linda, of Gardnerville, Nev., daughter; Kathleen Little and husband Ray, of Council Bluff, Iowa, sister; Ida Griffith, of Chico, Calif., and the glow in Dora's eyes: her grandchildren; Dennis Ramon Fleming, Ron Westman and Gina Glass, along with six precious great-grandchildren. Dora joins in her eternal home her loving husband John who passed from this life in 1984, grandson; Alan Steven Fleming, four brothers and one sister. Following cremation locally at Fehrman Crematory, at Dora's request private family scattering services will take place on their Eagle Lake property.
