Eva Hum Obituary

Eva Wong Hum's life was one typified by love from and for her family, friends, and community. Eva was born to her beloved parents Frank and Carolyn Wong in San Diego in 1966. It is perhaps appropriate that the best communicator in the family, most independent of her siblings and the future attorney, was born at a time when the United States and the world were going through change and revolution. Always an advocate for her family and community, she would use her communication skills to expertly speak up for the matters closest to her heart. It was always the case that one would know what was on her mind and what her priorities were. With hard work, she'd get what she was after. Through it all, she never fell short as a caring daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend.
As the first-born child in the family, she was immediately the pride and joy of her parents and grandparents, and she would pave the way as a role model for her four younger sisters. She grew up and attended schools in San Diego and La Jolla. After graduating from La Jolla High School with the highest cum laude distinction, Eva would stay close to home when it came time to pursue her college degree. As a student at UCSD, she formed lifelong friendships, immersed herself in campus life, and zipped around town in her blue two-door Mustang. As the Arts Editor of The Guardian, the University's official student newspaper, she elevated the "Hiatus" arts section to a new level through her communication and graphic design skills as well as her passion and knowledge of the arts and entertainment. She covered the San Diego arts scene and even attended the Grammy Awards. It was also at UCSD that she discovered her enthusiasm for pottery. Between classes, studying and the newspaper, she would spend time in the pottery studio and would bring her sisters with her hoping they'd take it up as well. She would go on to graduate with honors from UCSD.
Being a member of the Chinese community was always a central part of her identity. She had a lot of pride in her culture and heritage. Central to her identity was being a first-generation American-born-Chinese whose first language was Toi San, thanks to the time she spent with her maternal grandparents and at her paternal grandparents' Chinese restaurant, House of Wong. Growing up, she was an active member of the youth council at the Chinese Community Church. As a high school student, she was crowned Miss House of China to represent the House of China in Balboa Park. In college, she became proficient in Mandarin and spent time abroad with classmates on a university trek to China.
Following graduation from UCSD, she worked locally in San Diego and later moved to San Francisco in pursuit of a law degree. She would eventually finish law school in San Diego and pass the California Bar exam on her first try (truly a great moment of pride for her father!). Also in that time, as one who was good with words, she was a contestant on the Wheel of Fortune.
In the years she was in law school, she met the love of her life, Peter Hum, while attending a Young Adult Fellowship outing to watch Terminator 2: Judgment Day with her Chinese Community Church friends. Peter and Eva were married in 1995 at the Hotel del Coronado, which would always hold a special place in her heart. Not long after their wedding, they relocated to Tucson, Arizona. It was there they built a warm and loving home together, and soon after, welcomed their first child, Kylee. Becoming a mother was a pivotal moment in her life and brought forth yet another identity she took great pride in.
But as if juggling work at a law firm and becoming first-time parents weren't enough, she and Peter decided to pursue their MBAs together.
Eva, Peter and Kylee would eventually relocate to La Jolla when Peter had an opportunity to join Kaiser Permanente as an internal medicine doctor. Shortly after their move back, Eva gave birth to their second child, Samuel. Raising children in her hometown and close to her parents, sisters, and extended family was important to her, and she further immersed herself within the local community. She became actively involved in Kylee and Sam's education and was an active member of their schools' parent organizations.
She also took great pride in their many athletic endeavors and made sure to cheer them on at every game. She herself also pursued her own athletic endeavors and trained with Team in Training to run a marathon in Maui and half marathons to raise funds and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. To further instill the importance of charity and being an upstanding member of the community, Kylee and Eva were active members of the National Charity League. Together with Peter, she was there for every accomplishment and also all the moments where a lesson was to be learned. As parents, Eva and Peter indulged their children with every opportunity to thrive and have plenty of fun. They even added a dog, Belle, who was loved and adored as if she were her third child.
Once her children went off to college, Eva took the time to pursue her dreams and passions. Baking was always an enthusiasm for her in her adult life. She would bake a fresh cookie to include in Sam's lunch every day when he was in high school. That love of baking extended to countless gifts of delicious cookies and baked goods for special occasions, holidays, and sometimes just because. She, along with her sisters, opened Bite Sized Bakery while continuing to run Performa Property Management. Shortly after opening the bakery, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought that courageous battle and was able to reach the five-year remission milestone.
Throughout her life, Eva enjoyed traveling. She traveled to Europe with her parents and sisters as a teenager, spent time in China in college, and then traveled around the US and world with her family.
They visited destinations including Japan, Hawaii, Europe, China, Canada, Peru, Russia, and national parks in the US. Many of their travels included visits with extended family and friends as well.
Truly partners in life, Eva and Peter embarked on a major home renovation to create a hub for family entertaining and fun. The extensiveness and timing of the project dovetailed with Covid-19 pandemic.
Eva and Peter, Kylee and Sam moved in with Eva's parents during a challenging time for the world, but Eva absolutely cherished this "together time" with her parents and her own family. She marveled at her parents' energy and enthusiasm for life.
Following Peter's retirement from Kaiser Permanente in June 2022, the 'end of the pandemic' and their move into their renovated home, Eva was looking forward to living life and the "van life" with road trips and adventures across the US in their new custom Sprinter van.
Unfortunately, she would face a new battle with a different and very aggressive form of breast cancer in September 2022. In her latest battle, she renewed her love for pottery and found solace in getting her hands dirty with clay. Always with others in mind, she enjoyed the process of making pottery pieces to give to her family and friends. During this time, she also became a dog mom for the second time to an adorable and rambunctious pup, Maverick. And forever a lover of words and word games, Wordle became a daily point of connection with family members near and far. She was proud that she very rarely broke her streak throughout 2022 and into 2023.
In her final days, a cousin of Eva's so succinctly said, "She's always struck me as the type of person that always got what she wanted with her tenacity, hard work and courage. That's why it's so hard to believe she's losing the battle." Eva lost her battle with breast cancer on May 17, 2023. She will be deeply missed and forever loved by her those who survive her, including her husband Peter; her children Kylee and Sam; her parents Frank and Carolyn; her sisters and their families Debbie, Julie, Joyce (Hubert Zecha) and Angela (Christopher Preston); her nieces Alexis, Abigail, and Lauren, and nephews Ming and Luke; her father-in-law Tom Hum; her sisters-in-law Angela (Kent Kawahara) and Jennifer (Mike Wu), brother-in-law Tom Hum, Jr (Jo Jo Hum) and their families; her aunts, uncles and many cousins; and her many friends.
A celebration of Eva's life will be held on July 8, 2023 at the Chinese Community Church (4998 Via Vallarta, San Diego) at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Eva's honor to the Susan G. Komen Foundation
