The Alameda Coroner’s office identified the woman today as Marsha Gonick, 48. The California Highway Patrol reported that the woman was driving a Mazda northbound on I-880 just south of Central Avenue in Fremont at about 6:35 a.m. when she lost control, spun across the roadway and came to rest in the No. 2 lane. A San Jose man driving a Honda northbound suddenly came upon the Mazda and attempted to stop but was unable to, according to the CHP. The man slammed into the driver side door of the Mazda, fatally injuring Gonick, according to the CHP report.
