RETIRED FIRE CHIEF APTOS/LA SELVA passed away at 75. Predeceased by George H. & Helen S. Scofield; Carol L. Heaney. Survived by George H. Scofield Jr.; Kristin, Kyle, Heather Scofield; Amber, Hayden, Wyatt Tesler; Kayla Barros-Matheney. Phil was known for his charismatic personality, storytelling, And strong connections to our Community. Born in Santa Cruz, graduated from Soquel High and began as a volunteer firefighter with Aptos/LaSelva Fire District in 1971. He was the first Firefighter/Paramedic in Santa Cruz County in 1978. Aptos Chamber of Commerce named him, along with fellow Paramedics, “Men of the Year” in 1979. Phil taught CPR/Fire Prevention Education; Became Captain in 1981; Instructed Fire Sciences at Cabrillo College; Served on the Board of Trustees, Soquel Elementary School District; Earned B.A., UCSF, Business Admin. As Battalion Chief, worked in Training/Operations; Advocated protective hearing gear. Appointed Chief, 1995, helped form first CERT Team/Increased staffing; Retired, 1998, due to disabilities resulting from his many years of dedicated service. He served as local CalPERS President. Phil was a Realtor with Bailey Properties and a docent at Seacliff Beach. He loved volunteering at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The impact of Philip’s service to the Santa Cruz Community will be forever felt by the many whose lives he touched. He will always be remembered as a Local Hero!
