Toni Jean "TJ" Jurgens passed away at home surrounded by her family on Sunday October 26, 2014. She grew up in Smyrna, and graduated from Smyrna High School and Del. Technical and Community College where she earned her Associates degree. Since being diagnosed with breast cancer in the early 1990's, and a recurrence in 2001, she worked tirelessly to make sure that elected officials and the public were addressing issues important to cancer patients, survivors, and their families. For several years, TJ was a leadership volunteer with the American Cancer Society. She served as the Volunteer Chairperson for the Relay For Life of Central Del., and was a member of the South Atlantic Relay For Life Task Force. Additionally, she served as the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network State Lead Ambassador for Del.. In this role, she led their Del. grassroots advocates, planned and attended meetings with lawmakers in both Del. and Washington D.C., and served as a champion for their advocacy efforts at RFL, MSABC and other partner organizations. She is survived by two daughters, Cathy (Doug) Austin, and Amy (Spencer) Wolf; she was 'Bammie' to Alex, Cody, Landon, and Zachary; and is also survived by a sister, Dina Bradley. |
