About CARMEN RENEE (LEHMANN) MANNING

Carmen Renee (Lehmann) Manning passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, in San Diego, Calif., from lung failure caused by the debilitating disease Scleroderma.

Carmen was born in St. Louis, Mo., on July 21, 1973, and moved to Key West, Fla., with her family in 1985. She grew up on the island, was a softball player and Conchette at Key West High School, and returned frequently to visit her many friends. She met her husband while he served at Navy Branch Health Clinic Key West, now Chief Michael Manning, and they married in 1997. In 2001, they moved, along with their young son, Dominic, first to New London, Conn., and later to San Diego, Calif., as Mike pursued his career in the U.S. Navy. The Navy provided exemplary care for Carmen throughout her ordeal, and we sincerely appreciate the efforts made on her behalf.

Carmen pursued an academic career and earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. She loved children and worked with children with special needs at Key West High School, Charles Barnum Elementary School in Groton, Conn., and at Barnhardt Elementary School in San Diego, Calif. She had a well-deserved reputation of having a profound impact on their lives.

To those of you who met her, be thankful for your brief time together. To those of you who knew her, please think of her fondly and keep her husband and young son in your thoughts. To those of us who loved her, there is a hole in our heart that cannot be filled. In time we will celebrate her life and rejoice her spirit. For now, however, we mourn. We mourn the loss of a loving wife, a beautiful daughter, an older and wiser sister, a dear friend, and most importantly, a devoted and caring mother to her young son, Dominic. Carmen is survived by her husband, Mike; her son, Dominic; her brother, Nicholas Lehmann; and her parents, Martin and Sharon Lehmann.

A service will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at The Chapel on Naval Submarine Base Point Loma San Diego. Carmen requested that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to: The Scleroderma Foundation, Attn: Donations, 300 Rosewood Drive No. 105, Danvers, MA 01923 or online at www.scleroderma.org/development/donate.shtm.
