Lois Alma Howell Carter, 80, of Puyallup, WA, passed away Sunday, October 5, 2008, following a brief illness.

Born in Pierce County Nov. 20, 1927 to the late Miles Albert Howell and Verdia Carter Howell, she was the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters. She spent most of her early life in Pierce County.

“Times were hard, but surrounded by her loving family, she was a happy, young girl with a ‘fun’ nature,” said a family member.

After graduation from Blackshear High School, she attended two years of college. Stafford T. Carter, also originally from Pierce County, proposed to her just after returning from World War II. In a whirlwind of events, he woke the preacher in the middle of the night and married Lois Feb. 9, 1948. Lois then became a military wife, an adventure which she loved.

They lived in many places around the country and overseas. One of her favorite being Vandenberg AFB, California, where she was involved in her children’s school activities, bowling and camping.

In 1964, after retiring from the service, the family moved north for a short time to Oregon and eventually settled in Puyallup, WA where they lived for over 30 years on a small one acre farm, enjoying chickens, family pets and other barn animals, raising gardens and canning together.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Stafford T. Carter, Puyallup, WA; four children, Joy Carter, Stamford, CT, Michael (Barbara) Carter, Bonney Lake, WA, Patricia Carter, Tacoma, WA and Pamela Carter, Edgewood, WA; nine grandchildren: Jennifer, Audrey, Steven, Shelley, Leah, Travis, Donovan, Harrison and Stephanie; eight great-grandchildren: Triston, Connor, Shaelyn, Emmeline, Max, Olivia, Wyatt and Leila and by numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, from the Hill Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Paul officiating.

Interment followed at Woodbine Cemetery in Puyallup, WA

Active pallbearers were Mel Fladeland and her grandsons, Steven Lee Rieger, Donovan Carter Verity and Harrison William Verity.
