About | Michael D. Wilks, former drug center official Spokane – Michael D. Wilks, a resident of Lewiston and former program director at the Asotin County Drug and Alcohol Abuse Center, died Thursday evening at Sacred Heart Medical Center here of congestive heart failure. He was 47. A member of the Alcoholism Professional Staff Society, he was a program director at the Asotin County Drug and Alcohol Abuse Center until it closed a few years ago. He was born August 24, 1940, at Paris, Idaho, the son of Dawson and Evelyn Smith Wilks. He lived at Paris until 1951 when he moved to Salmon, Idaho, graduating from high school in 1958. He also attended Lewis-Clark State College at Lewiston. From 1958 to 1961 he served with the U.S. Army. He returned and began working construction on Worshak Dam at Orofino. He married Norma Wunderlich in 1962 at Coeur d’Alene. They moved to Arco, Idaho, in 1963 where he owned and operated service stations. They moved to Moscow in 1966 where Wilks worked as an insurance agent. The couple later divorced. While at Moscow, Wilks was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He moved to Lewiston in 1968 and became medically disabled because of a heart condition. He married Betty Vontersch at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho in 1969. The couple moved to Grangeville, Idaho in 1972, returning to Lewiston in 1974. They were later divorced. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and camping and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Third Ward. Wilks married Teresa Sullivan on June 6, 1982, at Lewiston. She survives him at their home in Lewiston. Other survivors include his parents, Dawson and Evelyn Wilks of Lewiston; two sons, Michael Wilks of Orofino, and Damon Wilks of Lewiston; two daughters, Melanie McGreal of Princeton, Idaho and Rochelle Wilks of Lewiston; two stepsons, Shawn Maestrup of Clarkson and Darrell Sullivan of Fallon, Nev.; two stepdaughters, Deanna Spencer of Kennewick and Deborah Sullivan of Sterling Heights, Mich.; three brothers, Larry Wilks of Chula Vista, Ca., Brent Wilks of San Francisco and Boyd Wilks of Dyess Air Force Base, Texas; one sister, Sandra Seubert of Lewiston; and two grandchildren. Viewing will be Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home Lewiston. The grave side service will take place Wednesday at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens at 1:00 p.m.. Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. |
