About | Funeral services for Samuel Birch, 55, were held Monday, November 30, 1992 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gibbonsville Cemetery with Lynn Hodges of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints conducting. Mr. Birch passed away November 23, 1992 at Steele Memorial Hospital in Salmon of heart problems. He was born November 13, 1937 in Burley, Idaho the son of Lewis C. and Emma E. Knowles Birch. The family soon moved to Albion, Idaho. At the age of three, Sam was diagnosed as having polio, which confined him to an iron lung and leg braces until he was ten years old. In 1939 the family moved to Salmon where Sam attended school through the 10th grade. He later achieved his GED and attended technical school at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho where he received a degree in welding and metallurgy. Sam worked as a welder for a short time. He then went to work as a custodian for the Salmon School District. He also worked as a security guard for the Beam Plant, and for a short time at a saw mill in Kemmerer, Wyoming. Sam enjoyed playing pool and spending time in the mountains around Salmon. He was married three times and had three daughters by his second wife, which he raised by himself in Salmon. He is survived by his mother, Emma Knowles of Richfield, Idaho. Three daughters, Rose Birch of Richfield, Idaho; Sally Birch of Salmon, Idaho; and Bobbi Jo Birch of Idaho Falls, Idaho. He is also survived by one step son, Clay Jarvis of Boise, Idaho. Also surviving are two sisters; Anna Phillips of Lebanon, Oregon and Cloie Lerback of Clinton, Montana; one brother, Calvin Birch of DeCora, Iowa and four grandchildren. Burial took place in the Gibbonsville Cemetery under the direction of Jones and Casey Funeral Home of Salmon. |
