| About | SPRINGFIELD — The bizarre fatal accident at a weekend mud-racing event at the Illinois State Fairgrounds was a deadly turn in what generally has been a safe sport, racers and state officials said Monday. “It was just a freak accident,” said Nelson Capitano, a state police officer who was at the show. “There was no reason for it to happen.” A custom-made racing machine, called a mud bogger, sped out of control and into a crowd of onlookers Sunday afternoon, killing two people and injuring three. Kevin W. Huntley, 24, of Moline died Sunday shortly after the accident. |
