About | Michael Schouweiler Obituary John Michael "Mike" Schouweiler, 59, of Boulder passed away October 2, 2012 after a long and arduous battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. As he wished, Mike spent his last days at home with his wife, family, many friends and his little dog Harry. Mike was born to the late Jim and Patricia Schouweiler, February 26, 1953, in Harvey, IL. He graduated from Naperville Central High school in 1971. Mike was attending Western Illinois University when he decided to escape Illinois and head west to Boulder, Colorado for all it had to offer. Mike was a locomotive engineer for the BNSF Railway and was employed by them for more than 30 years, unintentionally following a family tradition going back generations to the founder of the Great Northern Railway. Even though he left Illinois, Mike remained a White Sox fan and in Boulder he was a CU Buffs Fan. He sponsored Boulder softball teams, notably the "Stokers", all the time gathering friends from all walks of life. Mike married Sharie Chapman Swan in 1984. In true Mike and Sharie fashion, the wedding was a great festival at home, complete with music, pig roast, ball caps and bumper stickers. Holidays were always like that with family and friends - Mike loved 4th of July and Thanksgiving get-togethers, whether at home, their Three Rivers cabin in Almont, CO or their place in Tucson. Mike had a goal to visit all the U.S. National Parks and he made all but three, making it to Glacier National Park just a few weeks before his passing. Mike Schouweiler was incredibly smart with an amazing memory for details and events. But more importantly he was loyal to and protective of family and friends, and maybe just a little ornery too. His was a life well lived, but way too short and with much more to give. And now Heaven has one more angel, clearly a "Spitfire"... up there smoking a Tiparillo. Mike is survived by his wife, Sharie; sister Shannon Cameron (Colin); brothers Tom Schouweiler (Sue) and Dick Schouweiler; many nieces, nephews, cousins, goddaughters, in-laws, and life-long friends. A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held Sunday, October 28, 2012 from 2p.m. to 5p.m. at Chautauqua's Community House in Boulder. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to The Family Hospice Foundation of Boulder or the National Park Foundation in memory of Mike Schouweiler.
