About Julie Rivers Feb 13, 1941- December 30, 2010
Julie was born at home in Fairmount Illinois to Amy Louise Reeves and Herman Clifford Jenkins. She lived in and around Fithian the beginning of her adult life. She married John Dunn and had 2 children. Troy and Tracy Dunn. She and her sister Dona started a Singing Telegram business in the early 80’s. She then moved to New Mexico where she did various jobs until the late 80’s when she started The Heyokah Retreat Center. Dona joined her in 1997. Together they expanded the Center and people from all over the world came to study the Native ways that Julie embraced. As her sister, I would like to share that the main thing that people said about her at the end of each Retreat was they had never met someone that welcomed them with such unconditional love. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to live with, work with, and share a life with her. A week before she passed she was sitting on her balcony and when I looked up at her I thought she looked like she had been crying. I went up to her and asked is there something I can do? She said she had been watching me do all the work at the center plus taking care of her and was thinking perhaps it would be easier for me if she was able to help a little bit or could just go ahead and pass. I was about to say something and she added. But, she said I don’t feel sad now, I was told by Spirit “IT’S NOT HOW MUCH YOU DO IT’S HOW MUCH YOU LOVE.” So right then and there I decided I was going to spend the rest of my time loving her as much as I could. I was so happy I did that because she was gone within a week. So I am thinking Julie would love it if I would pass the message along.
