About | October 27, 2009 A 24-year-old Melrose Park man responsible for a fatal crash in May was convicted today of driving under the influence for a fourth time and sentenced to 10 years in prison. In a plea agreement, Daniel Martinez admitted to aggravated driving under the influence and fleeing and eluding police when he ran a red light and struck a vehicle being driving by a 55-year-old Norridge man who had just completed a wellness check of his ailing parents. Martinez was driving west on Grand Avenue at 10:12 p.m. May 31 when an Elmwood Park police officer tried to pull him over. But instead of stopping, Martinez sped away in his maroon Ford Expedition, said Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini. Martinez blew a red light at Grand and Thatcher avenues in River Grove and collided with a green Volkswagen driven by Henry Manso, Santini said. Manso suffered severe injuries to his brain as well as broken bones and died soon after the crash. |
