About | Funeral services for Kenneth L. Phillips Jr., 56, Fulton, formerly of Rochelle, Ill., and East Moline, are 1 p.m. Thursday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Burial is in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, with military honors conducted by the East Moline American Legion Post 227. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. Ken passed away on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Nov. 25, 1950, in Rochelle, the son of Kenneth and Doris Mittan Phillips Sr. He graduated from high school in 1969 and entered into the US Army serving in the Vietnam War. While in the service, Kenny received the Purple Heart. He worked at the Chrysler Plant in Belvedere, Ill., before moving to East Moline where he went to work at Montgomery Elevator in Moline. Most recently he worked for the Corp of Engineers as the Lock and Dam No. 13 operator, retiring in October of 2006. He married Mary Lauff Haverand on July 1, 2005, in Morrison. Ken enjoyed drag racing, woodworking and camping. Survivors include his wife, Mary; stepchildren, Julie Haverand, Sterling, Ill., and Gregory Haverand, Dixon, Ill.; grandchildren, Helen and Ben; his mother, Doris Lutz, East Moline; sister, Linda Lewis, Mt. Morris, Ill.; brothers, Pressley Sisco, Fulton, Wesley Phillips, Coal Valley, Clyde Phillips, East Moline and Joe Sisco, East Moline; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
