Barbara Carol Church
May 28, 1957 – July 24, 2010
SUBLIMITY – With her family by her side, Barbara Carol Church passed away on July 24, 2010 after a two-year battle with cancer. Born on May 28, 1957, to Joseph and Cordelia Weber, she grew up one of eight children in Villa Park, Illinois. Upon graduation from Willowbrook High School in 1975, she enlisted in the U.S. Army, and was the first woman from the post in Ft. Riley, Kansas to be accepted by West Point Preparatory School. While serving in the military, she met and married Thomas Church on August 25, 1977. At the end of their military service, the couple relocated to the Salem area. They began a family with the birth of their daughter, Laura in 1983. Their son, Andrew was born in 1986. A loving, supportive, and extremely proud parent, Barbara enjoyed motherhood and always involved herself in her children’s academic and extracurricular activities. She was Leader for her daughter’s Girl Scout troop, and was always very supportive of her daughter’s participation in the Corvallis Youth Symphony. Barbara also volunteered as scorekeeper for her son’s basketball team, the Regis Rams, from 2002 to 2005, and enjoyed her travels to the OSAA playoffs in Pendleton, Oregon. She continued scorekeeping for the boy’s and then girl’s basketball teams through 2010. Also active in fundraising for Regis High School, Barbara chaired the Regis Green & Gold Auction in 2003. Her family remembers the pleasure she took in collecting stamps and coins, and her love for knitting and reading, which she enjoyed sharing with others.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Thomas Church; her two children, Laura Church and Andrew Church; along with her mother, Cordelia Weber; her five sisters, Ginny Aldag, Terry Mukukenow, Dorothy Brush, Janet Hayden, and Mary Jo Schoonover; and her two brothers, Carl Weber and Paul Weber. Barbara’s family would like to express their gratitude for the kind and generous support from so many of her close friends, as well as the nurses from Odyssey Hospice.
A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 28th at Immaculate Conception Church in Stayton. A Funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m., the following day, Thursday, July 29th at Immaculate Conception Church, following with a gravesite service for family and friends. The family invites members of the community who knew Barbara to a celebration of her life beginning at 3:30 p.m., July 29th, to be held at St. Anthony’s Hall in Sublimity, Oregon.
