| About | David attended school at and is a 1961 graduate from Brownsburg School District, Brownsburg, Indiana. Dave enjoyed working on vehicles to make them operate mechanically at their best. It was the era of new car concepts like the first models of Mustang, Cobra, Camaro, Thunderbirds, Pontiac GTO and earlier model years of cars conversted into hot rods. Mechanics were sorely needed to keep these cars, trucks, freight trucks and other unglamerous models on the road. After his High School graduation, he married Trudy (Trudie) A. Truax (McAllister). She was born in 1944 to Howard and Anna Truax. She had one brother Charles R. Truax. Her father was a Hendricks County farmer. Trudy and Dave had 4 children, Patricia Ziegler, Terrie Thompson, June T. C. Miller. and Troy Plummer and 7 grandchildren. Often, Dave worked two jobs to provide for his family's needs during his early adulthood. His evening job was usually vehicle related as a mechanic and a service station gas pump jockey at a town service station. Dave worked nights and Saturdays for at least 3 years at Beulah and Ole Carlson's Standard Oil Service Station at 101 East Main Street, Brownsburg, Indiana (now a Brownsburg Town Hall building parking lot). Subsequently, he worked the same schedule at the Main Street Phillips 66 Service Station. At Carlson's Standard Oil Statiion, Dave made a major difference upon a 16 years old teenager Earl Howard Bogle's (a 1967 Brownsburg graduate) future career. Earl began working at Carlson's station with Dave and the other hired mechanics. Earl Bogle was the 3rd Earl working for Beulah and Ole. Beulah would yell, "Earl, I need your help." All 3 of them came running to her. She always acted surprised, but her shepish smile meant she enjoyed our hustle. Beulah was the boss, not Ole nor Albert, their adult son. Earl 3 was too young to have a driver's license and did not own a car yet. He had one more year of high school to complete before attending Indiana Central College. At 4:00am to 6:00am every morning, he delivered the Indianapolis Star's early morning newspaper. Earl had transformed his paper route into the largest sales route in Central Indiana. He would continue to deliver newspapers a total of 5 years until August, 1968. On a busy Saturday morning, Dave came out from "under the hood" of a car after diagnosing what car parts needed to be repaired or replaced. After two weeks of pumping gas and washing windows, Dave decided that Earl 3 needed to learn about vehicle mechanics, too. The weekend mechanical workload needed quick and accurate completion by the Carlson's mechanics. Hastily, Dave approached Earl 3. "Well, its time you learned something about cars besides pumping gas! I guess it's UP TO ME to teach you since nobody else has! Come with me and let's get some grease on your hands and pants!" Neither knew what this day would mean to both of them. Earl 3 became a top sales pitch service station attedant by selling Trico and Anco wiper blades. Both wiper blade companies awarded a $5.00 for each 20 pairs of wiper blades the gas station sold. Besides wiper blades. Dave taught him to to analyze a car for wear and tear. Earl 3 learned to perform all types of mechanical work on cars, pickups, tractors, and mid-size freight or garbage trucks. Earl 3 replaced fan belts, tires, batteries, schocks, and old Tires, batteries, parts and accessories (TBA). He gave the Carlson's customers the best auto service taught to him by Dave and sometimes by Earl Herring. Business increased for the Carlson Standard Oil Station. Dave once had to fist fight another, older employee whose first name was the first Earl to work at Carlson's Station. Dave was substantially smaller than this unexpected bully to Earl Bogle. Dave suffered bruises, but won the fist fight. Earl 2 Herring had seen what happened to cause the fight. He told Beulah about their fight. Beulah fired the oldest Earl 1 on the spot. Earl Bogle's job experience and training by Dave at Carlson Standard Oil station led to a successful career with Texaco Inc. He was employed 5 years later at the Texaco Marketing and Transportation Office along 10th Street in Speedway, Indiana. December 11, 1972, Earl Bogle's 30 year career begun. It was 3 days before his 23rd birthday. Earl worked in various positions for 30 years Texaco Inc. His first position began as a retail sales administration clerk. It led to 30 years in Marketing as a TBA Sales Assistant, Lubricant Sales, Real Estate, Regional Finance Representative, Regional Accounting Manager and Land Management. Earl would live in 4 states, Indiana, Ohio, Texas and Colorado. He was transferred to Cincinnati, Ohio on December 1, 1975 then to Texaco Rusk Building, downtown Houston, Texas Eventually, Earl earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Miami University , Oxford, Ohio majoring in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Mathematics and English. Earl retired from Texaco as an Area Land Manager located in Denver, Colorado on November 1, 2002 at age 52 after Chevron bought Texaco 2 years before. A career that would not have occurred in his life had it not been for David Plummer's training and counsel. David Plummer lays at rest in the Lizton Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Lizton, Indiana. God Bless You David! You were a terrific mechanic, teacher and friend. |
