| About | Robert Louis Higdon was born in Brownsburg, Indiana and remained a citizen for the rest of his life. Robert was a U. S. Marine Corp private first class during World War II. On January 27, 1945 he married Lydia B. Isaacs, who was born in Kentucky. They lived in Southtown Subdivision on Williams Drive during many of their adult years. Robert was an Insurance Agent upon their marriage. Later, he worked in a factory. Their two children, Jane Higdon Stack (Brownsburg High School class of 1968) and Ronald L. Higdon attended the Brownsburg School System, through High School. Robert and Lydia had 4 grandchildren. Robert played basketball for Brownsburg High School's team at its Community Building Gymnasium. Built in 1917, Brownsburg's first gymnasiuam was on the second floor of then named Lincoln Township School for all grades. Originally, the Brownsburg High School teams' nickname was the Cowboys from 1922 to 1941. Later, a new and larger gym was built next to the school. This gym had a seat capacity 800 when it was built in 1922. It was later named the College Avenue Gym since it was built along College Avenue near downtown Brownsburg. The College Avenue Gym appeared in the movie "Hoosiers" misnamed as Deer Lick Bulldogs. The movie nickname is a revision of Larry Bird's high school gymnasium located at French Lick, Indiana. The Bulldog emblem appeared at center court and on the Scorers Bench at mid court. The painted windows, elevated west stage, east doorway's glass and wood framed trophy case and elevated and railed seating were visible in the movie scenes, too. Two of the three Brownsburg teams' nicknames, Cowboys and Purple Flashes, were worn on sports uniforms during Robert's high school years. The team's nickname during his junior and senior years from 1941-1943 was when the team was renamed the Purple Flashes. The year after his graduation the nickname became Bulldogs. The teams continued to wear Purple and White uniforms except for a brief stint of Gray for the 1969-1971 school years. Nearby Brown Township School was founded in 1928. Later years Brown Township's Junior High School grades were combined into Lincoln Township. Beginning the fall 1957 school year, Brown Township Junior High School students in the 7th and 8th grades were bused to College Avenue school until the College Avenue school closed in 1996. Thereafter, the Brown Township students were bused to the 310 South Stadium Drive's school building until it closed, too.. All High School students for Brown and Lincoln Townships began attending the newly built 1957 High School. It was westward at 1000 O'Dell Street. This newer and larger High School replaced the Stadium Drive High School. Later, the 1957 High School was closed when the student population outgrew it, too The current gymnasiuam is nicknamed the Taj Mahal for its large capacity of 4,400 until a recent remodel reduced the stadium size to 3,800. Robert continued to attend high school basketball games at these stadiums. Robert Higdon was a kind and considerate person whom is missed by those where he worked, attended school together, friends and many other acquaintanes . Robert Higdon lies at rest in the Brownsburg, Indiana Cemetery. Rest in Peace. |
