Louis C. Schamp, 66, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away quietly at his home on Tuesday. Born in Sandusky, Ohio, Louis graduated from Western Reserve High School and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He spent eight years as a teacher at Chanute Air Force Base and retired as a Technical Sergeant. After his military career, Louis earned a BS from Purdue University and MS from Indiana University. He moved to Plainfield, and then Gosport, Indiana, and served as Director of Transportation and a vocational auto mechanic teacher in the Plainfield Community School Corporation until he retired in 2002. He was most recently self-employed as a warranty inspector for the automotive industry. Louis was a 4-H Club member and leader who specialized in farming and cattle, an avid tinkerer and hobby farmer. He also loved trains and antiques. He was a parishioner at St. Paul’s Catholic Center in Bloomington.

As a teacher and father, Louis dedicated his life to educating and molding our youth. He welcomed countless people in need of help into his home, enhanced the lives of friends and strangers alike, and touched those fortunate souls with his quiet faith and steadfast support. Louis enjoyed spending time with family and friends, camping, boating and gardening. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Beatrice, 10 children (Connie Trinkle, Beverly [Collins]Chong, Garey Collins, Serena Schamp-Deaton, Aaron Schamp, Patti Williams, Crystal Schamp, Christina Schamp, Gene Gill and Donald Johnson) and 16 grandchildren. Louis is preceeded in death by his parents, Earl and Dorothy Schamp, and his sister, Helen Manhart.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Center in Bloomington, Indiana. Calling hours will be at the church from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. A family dinner will be held directly after the mass in the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to St. Paul Catholic Center, ATTN: University Intern Fund, 1413 East 17th Street, Bloomington, IN 47403.
