About Donald Ostrander, of Chesterton, died due to pancreatic cancer Friday, March 14, 2003 at V.N.A. Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso. He was 51.
He was born November 30, 1951 in Washington, Pennsylvania, the son of William James and Martha Ann (Charney) Ostrander, who preceded him in death.
On August 11, 1984 in Chesterton, he married Susan Lomas, who survives in Chesterton.
He is also survived by two sons, Joseph William (age 11) and Donald Robert (Tracy) Ostrander of Hobart; four daughters, Colleen Diane (age 16), Danielle Michelle (14), Cristi Lin (Joseph) Subart of Hobart and Jaime Lyn (Robert) Holman of Fayetteville, Tenn.; four brothers, Albert (Marge) Ostrander, of Pa., Eugene (Belinda) Ostrander, of Pa., Kenneth Ostrander of Arizona, and Raymond (Melinda) Ostrander, Lake Station, Ind.; five sisters, Dorothy (Ted) Weaver of Pa., Mary Jane (Lawrence) Wheeler of Lake Station, Barbara Ward of Md., LaVerna (Fred) Drabeck of Pa., Martha (George) Baker of Md. and Darlene (Herb) Dicks of Pa; 10 grandchildren, Michael and Jaclin Owen (Subart), Stephanie, Delaney, Skylar and Victoria Subart, David Hailey, Abbye Ostrander and Amberlyn Holman.
He was a Chesterton resident for 21 years and was employed for 33 years at Bethlehem Steel where he was a crane operator and scarfer. He was a graduate of River Forest High School. He was involved in coaching and umpiring for the boys and girls State Park Little League. He was manager of girls fast pitch softball (Indiana Fireballs). He was a member of St. Patrick Church. He retired in Oct. 2002 due to illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial, Father James Meade officiating, is scheduled at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Rd., Chesterton. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.
Visitation is scheduled from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, with a family memorial service at 7 p.m., at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.
Memorials may be made to the Ostrander Family Fund at any First National Bank location.
