About Beulah Frances Bishop, 97, of Rock Hill, S.C., died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008.

Born Oct. 10, 1911, in Shelby County, she was the daughter of Samuel and Allie (Macy) Phares. She married Thomas E. Bishop on June 27, 1943, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 2000.

Survivors include her son, David E. Bishop of Bloomington; daughter, Nancy Lynne (husband, Richard L.) Smith of Lake Wylie, S.C.; and grandchildren, Alexander Bishop Smith and Allison Rebecca Smith.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Helen M. Phares.

Mrs. Bishop had lived in South Carolina since May of 2007. Prior to that, she had lived in Rush and Shelby counties.

She had been a teacher and librarian. During her teaching career, she taught at Glenwood, Manilla, Greensburg and then Rushville High School, where she taught for 32 years, including the last seven years as the school librarian.

Mrs. Bishop graduated from Manilla High School in 1929, and from Indiana University with degrees in teaching Latin, math and English. She received her master's degree in library science. College recognition for scholastic achievements included memberships in Alpha Lambda Delta, Pi Lambda Theta, Eta Sigma Phi and Phi Beta Kappa.

She was a member of Main Street Christian Church, PEO Sisterhood, Fortnightly Study Club and the Indiana State School Librarian Association.
