About | Dorothy Elizabeth (Humphrey) Crawley, age 102, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016. Dorothy was born Jan. 18, 1914, the daughter of Frank and Bessie (Brickler) Humphrey, both deceased. Two brothers and two sisters are all deceased: Harold, William, Lois Jean and Mary Lou. She graduated from Clarksburg High School in 1931 and Hanover College with a Teacher’s License. Later she earned her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Ball State University. She taught at Richland, Mays, Haven, Belle Gregg and Rushville Elementary Schools, a total of 34 years. In 1934 she married Robert Crawley, deceased in 1988. She was a member of Main Street Christian Church, P.E.O. Sisterhood, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and local and Indiana Retired Teachers Association. Dorothy was a devoted IU and Colts fan, never stopping her admiration for Peyton Manning and was likely Tony Stewarts’s oldest NASCAR fan. She enjoyed writing poetry, traveling, reading mysteries, playing Sudoku and crossword puzzles. She was always interested in others, grace-filled and open-minded. Dorothy often said, “We only believe what we’ve been told. When we get a chance to educate ourselves—to broaden our minds—it’s a good thing! We are only limited by our own ignorance.” Survivors are nephews, David (Shirley) Humphrey, Steven, great-nephews Chad (Lisa) and great-great nieces Kendal and Kelsey, Michael (Melissa) and great-great nephew Bentley, Christy Nesbit and brother-in-law William Nesbit. Contributions may be made to Main Street Christian Church or the Rush County Community Foundation. Services will be held at 1 PM Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Moster Mortuary, Rushville, where friends are welcome to visit from 11 AM until time of service on Saturday. Revs. Dena Vittorio and David Humphrey will preside. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery. |
