About John was born in Rushville, IN on March 27, 1925 to Louise (Manley) Lockwood and Luther Amos Lockwood. He graduated from Rushville High School in 1943 and attended Purdue University where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and majored in mechanical engineering.

His college education was interrupted by WWII where he served in the U.S. Army with the 87th Division. He returned home and married his late wife Vanlila (Frank) Lockwood on August 5, 1947.

John graduated from Purdue University in 1950, and was stationed in Stillwater, OK, where John and Vanny began their family. He then served his country as a finance officer during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning from duty, he left the Air Force and the family moved to Indianapolis, IN where he began his 33 year career with Indiana Bell Telephone Company. During the Cold War, John was transferred to New York City to work for AT&T and engineered the BMEW (Ballistic Missile Early Warning) line of defense located above the Arctic Circle. In 1961, the family returned to Indianapolis where he has resided until his death. John was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, Indiana Bell Telephone Pioneers, and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, the Murat Shrine and Rushville Elks Club.

John is survived by his wife, Joyce Bell; his children, John Frank Lockwood (Terry) and JoVan (Lockwood) Shaw; grandchildren, Nita (Shaw) Douglas and Erin Lynne Shaw; brother, Thomas Lockwood (Charlotte) of Charlotte, NC; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
