About | John Seward Phillips, 74 of Fayetteville, AR, passed away in his sleep Wednesday, February 22, 2012, in Fayetteville, AR. He was born September 24, 1937, in Rushville, IN, to Richard Phillips and Helen (Seward) Phillips. He was a retired linguistics professor and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He graduated from Rushville, Indiana High School and went on to earn degrees from George Washington University and Indiana University. He was a loving father, grandfather, uncle, and brother. He lived a life filled with travels and other experiences, in ways that most of us can only dream. He traveled and worked around the world, and cherished everything that he saw and experienced. He retired to Fayetteville to be near his son's family, and he loved every moment he had with his grandsons especially. Even in retirement, he loved sharing his experiences in linguistics, and he was a conversational English volunteer to foreign students at the University of Arkansas. He was an avid collector of paintings and other crafts that filled his home, and he loved talking about the pieces he had acquired over the years, sharing stories about them with his family and friends. Finally, he was a man of immense generosity to family and friends alike, whether sharing in his material possessions or simply words of kindness and gratitude to others. He is survived by a son, Ali Phillips and wife, Teri Malies of Bentonville, AR; two sisters, Deborah Gallagher and husband Tom of Shelbyville, IN, and Sara Keyler and husband Jim of Indianapolis, IN; two grandsons, Connor & Ian Phillips; a niece and nephew, and several great-nephews and a great-niece. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to any local food bank, as John had a special place in his heart for those less fortunate than him. Arrangements are under the direction of Moore's Funeral Chapel of Fayetteville. ******************************** Year of graduation estimated based on his birth year plus 18 years. |
