About | Karl R. Kalp 86, Indianapolis, passed away Friday, January 12, 2007. Karl was born in Frankfort, IN on March 8, 1920 to Karl L. and Euphemia (Henderson) Kalp. Dr. Kalp graduated from Rushville High School. He attended Butler University from 1946-1948 graduating Cum Laude. He earned his MS degree in 1952 and LL D degree in 1973, from Bulter University. He attended Columbia University during the summer of 1969; and Yale University from 1970-71 for post doctoral study in school administration. Dr. Kalp was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he rose to the rank of Captain. He served during WWII, and the Korean War. He was awarded the Silver Star; Bronze Star; Army Commendation Medal; and Purple Heart with cluster. Dr. Kalp taught English and Social Studies from 1948-50 at Indianapolis Public Schools, until he was recalled to active duty during the Korean War 1950-52. He taught at Arsenal Technical High School in 1952. He was the IPS Assistant Superintendent in 1960, the Associate Superintendent in 1968, Acting Superintendent twice, and Superintendent from 1972-82. Dr. Kalp holds keys to the city from Mayors Lugar and Hudnut, and was named a Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Orr in 1982. He was a member of Third Christian Church; Rotary International (Paul Harris Fellow); The Service Club of Indianapolis; Executive Service Corps; Masonic Lodge; Scottish Rite; and Phi Delta Kappa. Dr. Kalp was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella (Downey) Kalp. Survivors include his daughters, Jeanne McNew of Indianapolis, Janet Jackson of Muncie, and Joanne Kahn of Southborough, MA; grandsons, Scott McNew, Nathan Karl Jackson, Daniel Jackson; granddaughters, Kayleigh Kahn and Lia Kahn; and great-grandson, Brandon Scott Jackson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center- Broad Ripple. Friends may call from 2 until 6 p.m. on Monday, January 15, 2007 at the funeral center. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
