About | Mary Helen (Moorman) Meckes, 84, passed away Monday, March 31. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends in her home. Mary was born on Oct. 7, 1929 in Indianapolis, the daughter of Joseph C. and Bertha (Horan) Moorman of Millhousen. On Nov. 22, 1950, she married Carl C. Meckes and he preceded her in death on June 15, 2005. Mary Helen attended St. Joseph's Academy in Tipton and later transferred to Rushville High School, where she graduated in 1947. She was co-owner of Mr. Freshie Donuts in Rushville with her husband. After retirement, Mary Helen and Carl spent their winters traveling out west in their motorhome. She worked as a volunteer for several years for the American Cancer Society and eventually organized the cancer drive for Rush County. Mary was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed spending time in nature and capturing precious moments with her camera. She was a member of the Belles of St. Mary's. Mary Helen is survived by three sons, Joseph Meckes, Gene (Carol) Meckes, of Rushville and David (Dona) Meckes, of Greenfield; two daughters, Sarah Prather of Rushville and Christina Lushell of Frankfort; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and two nephews. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret Mary and Susan Meckes; one son, Paul Meckes; one grandson, Jason Meckes; and sons-in-law, Jerry Prather and Mike Lushell. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at Moster Mortuary in Rushville. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m., with Rev. Charles Justice presiding. Cremation will take place after the service and a private burial will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rush County Community Foundation Food Pantry Fund or Rushville Public Library. |
