RUSHVILLE — Philip Edwin Voiles, 70, passed away at his home in Rushville.

Phil was born July 3, 1942, in Rushville to Gerald and Evelyn (Hufferd) Voiles. He graduated second in his class from Rushville High School in 1960, graduated second in his class from Wabash College in 1964 and received his Master's Degree from Antioch College in 1965.

Phil taught in the Rush County School system for 28 years, the first two years at Manilla and 26 years at Rushville High School. Phil loved teaching math and working with his students. Phil was one of the first teachers to recognize the importance of computers. He participated in a class at Indiana Central College (now University of Indianapolis) during the summer of 1970 learning to use a computer. He began using a computer in class that fall so he could enhance his math classes and help his students learn.

Phil quickly found other uses for his new-found computer skills by computing stats for the high school athletic teams and maintaining names and addresses of RHS/RCHS Alumni Association members, which he did for several decades. Phil was a scorekeeper for the Babe Ruth League for many years and many more years for high school athletics, often traveling to out-of-town games with the teams and then working late into the night to have the stats ready by morning.

Phil loved people, and after retiring from teaching worked at Hubler Chevrolet, Batesville Casket Company and Shell Oil Company. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and attended Main Street Christian Church. He was an advisor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and drove members to seminars and activities. Phil was a member of the Optimist Breakfast Club, Retired Teachers Association, RHS/RCHS Alumni Association – Past President (2000 and 2001) and Alumni Community Service Award Winner in 2000. He loved his family, friends, genealogy, cars (especially Corvettes), computers, numbers and old movies. Phil was a very generous person, willing to loan his vehicle to family or friends, willing to take family to doctor appointments, run errands if needed, or just be there. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by brothers, William Voiles of Rushville and Don (Diana) Voiles of Kokomo; niece and nephews, Brian (Lesley) Voiles, Lafayette, Karen (Michael) Causey, Austell, Ga., Michael (Janci) Voiles, Kokomo, and David Voiles, San Francisco, Calif.; great-nieces and nephews, Aubrie Voies, Krysta Wininger, Braydon Voiles, Darian Voiles and Mason Voiles.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Janet Voiles.
