RUSHVILLE — Richard "Dick" Garretson, 67, of Crown Point, passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013.

Dick is survived by his wife, Marti; two children, Chris (Beth) Garretson of Lafayette and Bethany (Jerry) Dawa of San Diego, Calif.; one granddaughter, Vivienne Garretson; and one brother, Jim Garretson of Carmel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Marjorie Garretson, and brother, Don Garretson.

Dick attended Rushville High School, Class of 1964. He graduated from Ball State University in 1968, and later attained his Master's Degree. Dick was a teacher in the Crown Point Community School Corporation for 38 years, teaching 5th grade at both Lake Street and Eisenhower Elementary Schools. He was a member of the Lake County Retired Teachers Association and Indiana Retired Teachers. Dick loved crossword puzzles, reading, grilling, traveling, "stooping" and enjoying his man cave in the garage. He looked forward to meeting the Breakfast Club at Schoop's every morning and joining his colleagues for Friday afternoon drinks.

Dick, also known as "Dicky" to his wife, "Mr. G" to his students and "Poppy" to his granddaughter, was a good friend, a great husband and father, and an amazing teacher. He was happiest in a social setting, whether he was hosting guests and grilling, "stooping" on the front porch with neighbors, visiting his kids in Lafayette or San Diego, or wintering in Florida and/or Arizona. After retiring, he loved volunteering for Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana.

Earlier in his life, Dick was an avid bowler, president of the Hub Swim Club, and a coach of intramural basketball.

A visitation will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 at Geisen Funeral-Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Avenue/South Street (2 blocks east of Broadway), Crown Point, from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. At 2 p.m. the Celebration of Life service will begin.

Everyone coming to the memorial gathering is encouraged to come in casual dress; Hawaiian shirts are encouraged.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be made to either Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana or the Crown Point Community Foundation.
