About Douglas Mackey, 63, of Akron, Iowa passed away Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Akron. Military honors will be conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Visitation with the family present will be Friday, February 20, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Honorary Pall Bearers will be his family and many friends.

Douglas Edward Mackey was born March 16, 1951 in Akron, Iowa, the son of Francis and Frances (Scott) Mackey. He attended school in Akron until moving to Sioux City.

He enlisted in the United States Army on December 22, 1969. He served his country during the Vietnam War. While in the service, he received his G.E.D. He was honorably discharged on January 19, 1972. Following his discharge, he returned to Sioux City.

Doug began his career as an over the road truck driver. He started out driving for local trucking companies before becoming and owner/operator for many years.

He was united in marriage to Cora Mason on June 28, 1980 in Sioux City. They made their home in Hubbard, NE until 1997, when they moved to Akron. He retired from trucking after his health began to fail.

Doug was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Akron. Through the years, he enjoyed gardening, playing cribbage and pool, grilling, and Christian music. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Cora of Akron; a daughter: Leanna (Roger) Collins of Cherokee, IA, and their children: Douglas Mackey, Mariah Collins, Samuel Collins, and Zacheriah Collins; a son: Jedediah Mackey (special friend, Laura Sanow) of Le Mars, Iowa and her daughter: Chloe Sanow; a son: Mason Mackey of Akron; his siblings: James (Randi) Mackey of Le Mars, IA, Ronald (Sandi) Mackey of Gilbert, AZ, Julie Moriston of Onawa, IA, Kathy Nichols of Onawa, IA, Cindy (Jerry) Osterholt of Onawa, IA, and Steve (Teri) Mackey of Sioux City, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson: Austin Collins; and a close friend: Mert Beeck.
