About DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Allen W. Clouse, 59, of 813 Second St. SW, Dyersville, died at 9:56 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyers-ville, with the Rev. Penelope Thacker officiating. Burial will be in the Guttenberg City Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dyersville Post 137. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the Dyersville Police and area policemen will meet at 6 p.m., and the American Legion, Dyersville Post 137 will meet at 7 p.m.
He was born on Aug. 8, 1945, in Estherville, son of Perry Wilbur "Bill" and Rowena (Tomlinson) Clouse. He married Sandra L. Handke on July 23, 1969, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.
He was a 1964 graduate of Fairfield (Iowa) High School.
He was enlisted in the Navy, having served on the USS Rushmore LSD14 in the Mediterranean Sea from 1964 to 1968.
Upon his return home from the Navy, he worked as an electrician for Spencer Construction. He attended the police academy in Des Moines and joined the Dyersville police force in 1970. He soon was promoted to the position of police chief, retiring in 2000. To fill his time after retirement, he worked part-time for Orkin Exterminating Co.
He was a member of the American Legion, Dyersville Post 137.
He was well-respected in the community and known for his no-nonsense approach to law enforcement in Dyersville. He was held in very high regard by all those fortunate enough to call him friend.
He was an avid reader, but he also enjoyed fixing anything that was broken. He was the handyman for his entire family and was called upon often for his help, which he readily gave.
Allen's very favorite activities included family time with his wife, children and grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. He also enjoyed working around his yard and home with his wife, Sandy, by his side.
Wonderful memories of Allen will be cherished forever by his wife, Sandra Clouse; their children, Chad (Amy) Clouse and Becky (Russell) Huberty, both of Dyersville; four grandchildren, Dustin Clouse, Spencer Clouse, Amber Huberty and Austin Huberty; his mother, Rowena Clouse, of Dyersville; seven siblings, Edward (Treva) Clouse, of Dysart, Eldon (Debbie) Clouse, of Marion, Linda Weaver, of Estherville, Kathy (David) Jungen, of Big Bend, Wis., and Jeanne (Steve) Boulting, Alesha (Jerry) Kara and Paula Riesselman, all of Dubuque; his father and mother-in-law, Art and Lorraine Handke, of Littleport; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Verna Johanningmeier, of Waterville, Shirley (Ray) Williams and Linda Handke, both of Elkader, Bob (Betty) Handke, of Monona, Sue (Dayton) Miller, of Guttenberg, Bill Handke, of Arlington, and Patty (Lonny) Amsden, of Littleport.
He was preceded in death by his father, Perry Wilbur "Bill" Clouse, on Aug. 4, 1987, and two brothers-in-law, Jim Handke and Mikeal Handke.
An Allen W. Clouse Memorial Fund has been established.
