About Elaine Marie Anderson, 68, of Brighton, Iowa, formerly of Des Moines, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington following a battle with Leukemia.
Celebration of life services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 28, 2013, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. Military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place in conjunction with the memorial service. Interment will take place at a later date. Memorials have been established for the Wounded Warrior Project.
Elaine Marie Anderson was born November 4, 1945, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the daughter of Merlyn and Emma (Smith) Anderson. She attended Walnut #5 Country School in Germanville, Iowa, and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1964. Elaine attended Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa, before joining the Army in 1966. Elaine served in the United States Army for two years where she did courier work. She graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant in 1971 with her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting.
Following her graduation from Iowa Wesleyan, Elaine moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where she worked at several jobs before going to work for the City of Des Moines. She worked as the payroll clerk for the Wastewater Treatment Plant until her retirement in 2010. She retired from the Army Reserves in 2008 after serving in the Reserves for more than twenty years. She was proud of her time in the Reserves and enjoyed her travels, many of which took her overseas.
Elaine lived most of her adult life in the Des Moines area. She moved back to the home farm in 2011 to be closer to her family. She enjoyed her time back on the farm and liked to garden.
She is survived by her brother, Roy Anderson of Brighton, Iowa; sister, Kathleen Anderson of Brighton, Iowa; brother, Richard Anderson and wife Kim Melhenbacher of Storm Lake, Iowa; brother, Robert Anderson of Brighton, Iowa; five nieces; one great-niece, one great-nephew and one brother-in-law, Jerry Hird of Brighton, Iowa.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Roger Anderson; and one sister, Phyllis Hird.
Elaine Marie Anderson
