Date of Passing Oct 30, 2011
About 21 Jan 1964 – 30 Oct 2011
Timothy A. Franklin of Jacksonville, Ore., died Sunday afternoon, Oct. 30, 2011, in a motor vehicle accident.
He was born Jan. 21, 1964, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, received his B.A. from the University of Iowa and M.S. from Utah State. Tim joined the Peace Corps, working in the field and later as an in-country agroforestry trainer in Mali and Togo West Africa for nearly four years. He married Elizabeth G. Pyle on May 18, 1996, in Torrey, Utah and moved to the Medford area of Oregon.
Tim became acquainted with the Southern Oregon landscape as a field ecologist for The Nature Conservancy in 1996. Later, in 1999, Tim obtained an internship through AmeriCorps and began working for the Applegate Watershed Council as a project manager. He received a Governor’s commendation upon completion of his service as an AmeriCorps volunteer. As well as being a consultant for the Applegate Watershed Council, Tim worked as manager of Yale Creek Ranch in Jacksonville, Ore. He assisted the owners of Yale Creek Ranch, Linda and Richard Schaeff, to start the Yale Creek Ranch Organic Meat Community Supported Agriculture business.
He was associated with Oregon Tilth, Salmon Safe, Siskiyou Sustainable Cooperative, Southern Oregon Land Conservancy Consulting Board, and the Applegator newspaper. He was a strong promoter of conservation and organic farming and provided sustainable pasture management and organic farming training and seminars on the ranch. He wrote restoration technical guides and worked with landowners and resource professionals to create a landowner stewardship guide and worked with the director of Salmon-Safe, Inc., to introduce the Salmon-Safe Applegate eco-label into the Applegate valley.
He mentored and trained many young farmers, providing hands-on internships through the Rogue Farm Corps. He was instrumental in the development of curriculum authored by members of the Siskyou Sustaninable CSA and used to train students of the Rogue Farm Corps.
He enjoyed working in the outdoors, camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing, and was an avid reader, but his greatest joy was spending time with his children. He was much loved and will be missed by his family who is proud of the life he led and the selfless contributions he made to enrich this land and to help make its caretakers mindful stewards who live in harmony with the earth.
He is survived by his wife, Beth; children, Hannah and Quinn; his parents, Larry G. Franklin and Rosalee A. Franklin (James) of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Scott B. Franklin (Deanna), and nieces, Jenna and Alyssa, of Fort Collins, Colo.; and a great-grandmother, Gladys James-Biskup of Cedar Rapids. A memorial gathering will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at Yale Creek Ranch, 176 Yale Creek Rd., Jacksonville, Ore.
A fund for the children has been established by friends at Sterling Savings Bank, P.O. Box 1356, Jacksonville, OR 97530.
