Meek, 73, will be at 1:00 pm, Monday, March 21, 2016 at the Fort Sill National Cemetery under the direction of the Fletcher Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 20, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Fletcher Funeral Home. Gary passed away on March 16, 2016, in Oklahoma City after a lengthy illness. Gary was born, August 25, 1942, in Hamburg, Iowa to Wayne and Mae Meek. He grew up in Hamburg, married the love of his life Karen Hughes, his wife of 55 years and joined the service and served his Country honorably for 20 years. During his distinguished career serving his country and his bravery during multiple tours in Vietnam and Korea, Gary was awarded the following: Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal with V Device, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Two Overseas Service Bars, Bronze Star Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Expert (Rifle M-16), Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation with Palm. One of Gary’s favorite pastimes was square dancing. Gary square danced for many years with his wife and all his kids, and made many lifelong friends. Gary started out as a member of the Kuntry Kuzins of Lawton, later joined the Square Toppers of Lawton, and is currently a member of the Swinging Chicks of Chickasha. Upon retiring from the Army, Gary joined a small defense contractor called Telos working on the Fires Contract at Lawton/Fort Sill. His management skills and caring for people quickly earned him a management position on his way to the project manager position. Gary retired from the Fires Contract in 2006. After his second retirement Gary fought a battle with heart disease and received a heart transplant in 2007. As a husband and father Gary cared a great deal about his wife and family, as well as his dogs. As a manager Gary cared a great deal about his employees. Gary is survived by his wife, Karen, his three sons: Robbie and his wife Tammye of Elgin OK, Shane and his wife Darlene of Sierra Vista Arizona, Troy and his wife Jenny of Fletcher OK; six grandchildren: Daniel Meek, Sara Thorp and her husband Curtis, Joshua Meek, Ryan Meek, Dillon Meek, Megan Meek, and one great grandchild Mason Thorp expected March 20; two brothers: Ricky Meek and his wife Teryl of Carl Junction Missouri; David Meek and his wife Sylvia of Jessieville AR; two sisters: Shirley Meek of Sidney Iowa and Gayle Meek of Hamburg Iowa. Gary was preceded in death by his parents: Wayne and Mae Meek; a brother, Kenny Meek; and a grandson, Devon Meek. |
