About | Nancy (Lakin) Benson, formerly of Des Moines, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015 at home in Fairfax Station, Virginia next to her beloved husband of over 27 years Captain Mark M. Benson, USN, Ret. Born in Red Oak, Iowa she attended school in Emerson and Odebolt and high school at Westside in Omaha. Nancy is a graduate of the University of Iowa and earned her master's degree in Speech Pathology at the University of South Dakota. She loved working as a Speech and Language Pathologist and did so in both private practice and public schools her entire life. She served as president of Chi Omega's Northern Virginia Chapter for many years. Married in the former rose garden of the Iowa State Capitol, she moved to the East Coast in her role as Navy wife. Proud grandmother of three; mother to Josie (Brandon) Cellone of Pittsburgh, PA and Cliff Roberts of Minneapolis, MN; sister to Diane Kilzer of Denver, CO, Debbie Johnson of Ashland, OR and Chuck Lakin of Omaha, NE; and daughter of Charles and Florence Lakin of Omaha, NE. Nancy's interment will be held Friday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter.
