About | Sarah Jane "Sam" Price Funeral services will be conducted at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene, Kansas, for Sarah Jane Price, 28, at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday Nov. 11. Miss Price lost her gallant battle with a lingering illness and passed away Saturday, Nov. 1, at her home in Eureka, California. She was born on Jan. 20, 1980, to Lt. Scott and Fiona Price at Fort Carson, Colorado. She was raised as an Army brat in Colorado, Hawaii, Alabama and finally Kansas, where the family retired from the military service. She graduated from Chapman High School in 1998 where she participated in the school's foreign exchange program to Russia. She also played the flute in the school's band, as well as being a member of its forensics squad and its cross-country track team. Miss Price went on to graduate with honors from the University of Kansas in 2005 taking her Bachelors of Arts degree in the field of biology. While at KU she received her certification as a scuba diver. She also studied bat populations in Costa Rica, conducted Kansas prairie plant studies, and participated in an archeological survey of Adak, Alaska. While living in Kansas she was an active volunteer and docent at Fort Riley's First Territorial Capitol and Custer House. She also took part in living history demonstrations and period musical concerts in 14 consecutive Apple Day celebrations hosted by the post. She also volunteered for the National Park Service's Volunteers in the Parks Program at Fort Larned, Kan. as well as Wilson's Creek National Battlefield in Mo. Once she moved to California in the summer of 2006, she became active with the Friends of the Dunes and the Audubon Society. At the time of her death she was finishing her second year as a volunteer in AmeriCorps, Volunteers in Service to America, where she worked as a field biologist. She loved books, music, karaoke, horses as well as all the stray pets she rescued and brought home. She had dimples and freckles, bright blue eyes and an infectious smile that we will all miss. Her paternal grandparents John and Helen Price, of Huntsville, Ala., and her maternal grandfather, David V. Anders, of Mickleton, N. J., preceded Miss Price in death. She is survived by her parents, Scott and Fiona Price, of the Buckeye Township, her maternal grandmother Elizabeth McKellar Anders, of Mickleton, N. J., three brothers and their spouses or fiancées: David and Sarah Price, of Dickinson County, Kan., Sterling and Dolly Price of Dwight, Kan., and John Price and Rachel Eisner of Overland, Kan. Elder Bill Dearing from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' Salina Ward will officiate at the funeral service. Miss Price's remains were cremated in California; hence there will be no pallbearers. Burial will follow the funeral service in Buckeye Township's Union Cemetery.
