About Aleta SUE Rhodes November 21, 1952 – November 7, 2025
This poem was read at Daddy’s funeral and Sue had saved it and marked it with a star and an edit I know she would want me to share it with you.
Miss Me ~ But Let Me Go Author Unknown
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little ~ but not too long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the laughter that we once shared
Miss me ~ but let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone. It’s all part of the great plan
A step on the road home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss me ~But let me Go!
Sue was born at our grandparents’ house because Momma didn’t want to wake up Grandpa. She moved to Cherryvale, KS 28 days later with her parents, Verle and Buck (Tommy K.) Rhodes and her older sister, Peggy to a trailer on East Fifth Street. Her only brother Stub (Roy D.) and the baby sister, Mary Jean joined the family. In 1957, the family moved to a house on East Second Street.
Sue grew up an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, a Brownie/Girl Scout, a member of the Happy Hustler 4-H Club and part of the Buccaneers Girls Softball Team where she was definitely a utility player.
Sue attended Lincoln Central Elementary and Cherryvale Junior and Senior High School. She was active in almost everything during school and graduated with the Class of 1970 – yes, that class: the ones that changed Cherryvale Chargers to the school mascot.
After graduation Sue attended Coffeyville Community Junior College acquiring an AA Degree in 1972. She transferred to Kansas State College of Pittsburg and received a BS of Education in 1974. Instead of teaching, she moved to Springfield, MO. and joined the Chemical Industry where she started as an operator. But her Education Degree caused future Chemical companies in Texas, North Carolina, and Kentucky to use her education training to move her towards her final position of being in charge of all training and instruction internationally. Sue was traveling and working from home so she decided to make home closer to family in 2013 by moving to Grove, OK, and then retiring in 2017.
Sue loved learning new things, motorcycling with family, traveling, her water volleyball friends that made it seem not like exercise, all her new friends she met in the last few years, all of her old friends that she has known forever, and her Shelties! Her dogs won competitions but at home were just spoiled pets.
Her death was unexpected and quick caused by micro strokes, failing kidneys, and encephalopathy. She will be greatly missed by Peggy and her husband Mike Gragg, and Stub (Roy D.) Rhodes. Her only niece: Rachel and her husband Clayton Merrick and their children Beth and Caleb, nephews: Jerod and his wife, Lindy Rhodes and their children Keira and McKinley, Jacob and his wife Diane Rhodes, Matthew Rhodes, Josh Hammond and his partner, Emma. The uncles: Chick and his wife Sandy Rhodes, and Shorty Rhodes, and all the numerous cousins and their families. She was proceeded in death by her only sister-in-law, Lu Ann Rhodes, sister, Mary Jean Hammond, parents, Buck and Verle Rhodes, and an infant brother, Kenneth Ray Rhodes.
Sue will be cremated and placed in the family plot at La Harpe, KS. She asked that the ashes of the three Shelties that had died before, join her. There will be no funeral, she suggested people just have a party. No flowers are desired, just give a little extra to your church or favorite charity. The Cherryvale Museum and the Cherryvale Library (her first job – typing the three cards for the card catalog at 25 cents a set) are on her list.
