Timothy “Timmy Telephone” Schartz, 63, of rural Altamont, died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident south of Parsons on Wednesday morning, June 4, 2014.

He was born June 23, 1950 in Pittsburg, Kansas to William and Emma (Bush) Schartz. He was a graduate of Southeast High School in Cherokee, Kansas.

He retired from Craw-Kan as a telephone representative and most recently owned and operated TAPS lawn mowing service.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Edna. He enjoyed biking, hiking, motorcycling, traveling, fishing and playing softball. Through the years, he had served as Edna Police Chief, on the Labette County Sheriff’s Reserve, and had volunteered on both the Edna and Bartlett fire departments.

He and Connie Fowler were married in 1970. They later divorced. He and Penny Harruff were married August 13, 1997 in Miami, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on January 2, 2011.

Survivors include one son, Dwayne Schartz, of Lubbock, TX; two daughters, Koletta Alvarado and her husband, Christopher, Levelland, TX and Susan File and her husband, Roger, Levelland, TX; one stepdaughter, Kelly Beckett and her husband, Logan, Diamond, MO; ten grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; five brothers, Gene Schartz, Neosho, MO, Richard Schartz, Miami, OK, Mickey Schartz, Pittsburg, KS, Dennis Schartz, Pittsburg, KS and Danny Schartz, Pittsburg, KS; and one sister, Melissa Lawrence, Pittsburg, KS.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and his beloved dog, Lucy, who was also in the accident.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Edna. Burial will be in the Edna Elm Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Monday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.
