About David Lee Brumbaugh, 57, died March 14, 2009, due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident south of Coldwater, Kansas, on Highway 160/183. Born June 25, 1951, at Spearville, Kansas, he was the son of William W. and Frances V. (Waters) Brumbaugh.
He attended Spearville Public Schools and graduated from Spearville High School in May 1969. He then attended Dodge City Community College, where he graduated with an Associates Degree in 1971.
On August 5, 1972, he married Karen Jean Burt. To this union were born three children: Kelly William Brumbaugh, Mindy Renee Brumbaugh and Jesse Warren Brumbaugh.
At the time of his death, he was employed by Stan Koch & Sons Trucking Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He had been employed there since 1994. He had also been employed by Crust Buster, in Spearville, and Gigot Farms of Garden City, Kansas. Starting in 1982, he became City Marshal and Comanche County Deputy Sheriff in Protection, Kansas. He had also been employed at Filson Manufacturing. He served as an EMT and firefighter during those years. He is survived by his children: Kelly and Rachel Brumbaugh, of Protection, Mindy Brumbaugh and Scotty Beckham, of Coldwater, and Jesse Brumbaugh and fiancé, Katee Lenertz, of Wichita; two brothers, Duane Brumbaugh and wife, Marge, of Protection, and Charles Bessey and wife, Cindy, of Fort Worth, Texas; six grandsons: Kristopher Erik, David Charles, Damion Zachary, Jacob Smith, Jayden Smith, and D.J. DeBusk; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral service is at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 19, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home in Coldwater, with Pastor Brandon Hagins presiding.
Burial will follow the funeral service at Protection Cemetery in Protection.

From the obituary published in The Spearville News near the time of his passing. David was the fourth of our classmates to go, preceded by Ronald Salyer, Walt Giessel, and Mary Klenke Hornung.
