MALLOY - The Herald-Dispatch HUNTINGTON -- Highly motivated. A really fine young man. Well-liked. Such were the words of praise offered Tuesday by those who knew Chip Lampe, one of the three people killed in Sunday?s air crash in Lawrence County, Ohio, and a former resident of Ashland. Charles H. Lampe, 22, of Lexington, killed in Sunday's plane crash Charles Hayden "Chip" Lampe, 22, was a sophomore theater major at the University of Kentucky when he died with his girlfriend, Ginny M. Young, 20, of Willow Wood, Ohio, and her father, Dr. Michael Young, 53, of South Point, Ohio, when their single-engine Grumman Traveler crashed and burned at Lawrence County Airpark. "Chip didn?t know a stranger. He lit up a room when he walked in," said his mother, Betsy Lampe, a former Ashland resident who now lives in Lexington. Betsy Lampe said her son was born in Louisville, but lived in Boston, Montreal, Washington, D.C., and Ashland. He spent a year with Up With People after he graduated from high school. He had also spent time in San Francisco studying screenwriting and editing. "He loved sports," she said. "He loved to play the piano?. He wanted to be a playwright. He had no doubt he would be famous some day." She described his girlfriend, Ginny Young, as a "beautiful, intelligent young lady. They both had such promise. It?s a terrible loss." Chip Lampe?s many friends are also devastated following the crash. Holly Hughes, a 1999 Blazer graduate, said she and Lampe "were like best friends. We told each other everything. He was full of life in every way." She and her friend, Megan Green, spent Saturday night -- the night before the crash -- with Lampe and his girlfriend at the 20th Street Bar and Grill in Huntington. "Everyone is just devastated by this," Hughes said. "It hasn?t really sunk in yet. I keep wanting to pick up the phone and call him." Andy Ballash, principal of Paul Blazer High School, who was assistant principal when Chip Lampe attended, still remembers the young man with a promising future. "I found Chip to be a highly motivated student," Ballash said. "He was well-liked and well-received by his peer group. He was a strong leader for us." Lampe loved playing soccer, beginning in middle school and continuing through high school. "He constantly worked on his game, and got better and better because of his work ethic," says Blazer Soccer Coach Frank Sloan. "By the time he was a senior, he was our second-highest scorer. He was one of the reasons we went to the regional finals." Sloan says he saw Lampe four or five times after graduation. "He had gotten into acting, which he really enjoyed," Sloan says. "He turned into a really fine young man." Lampe spent some time with WorldSmart?s Up With People Program, which involved travel, learning, performance and service. "He really enjoyed it," Sloan says. "I think it had a lot to do with him going into the field of acting." Lampe, a native of Louisville, was a son of Stanford H. Lampe of Louisville, a spokesman for the Kentucky Department of Education in Louisville and a former spokesman for Ashland Inc. in Ashland and Covington, Ky. He had attended The Academy of Art in San Francisco, Calif., and was a member of the South Ashland United Methodist Church. In addition to participating in theater, he also was a member of UK?s ice hockey team. Lampe?s funeral service will be conducted at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 463 Main St. in Lexington, at 10 a.m. Friday, with burial in Lexington Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Additional survivors include his grandmothers, Helen Schmidt and Phylinda A. Lampe, both of Lexington; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial contributions are suggested to the UK Theatre Department, 114 Fine Arts Building, Lexington, KY 40506. |
