Mildred Arlene Bither McIntosh, 93, of Houlton, passed away April 17, 2015 at a local healthcare facility. She was born November 21, 1921 at Linneus, the daughter of Maurice and Beryl (Stewart) Bither. Mildred attended Linneus Elementary and was a graduate of Houlton High School, Class of 1939. Mildred met Herschel K. McIntosh and married him on August 16, 1941. Family, church, her business and the fraternal Order of the Eastern Star were all great joys in Mildred’s life. She also enjoyed spending summers at the cottage at Nickerson Lake, traveling and visiting many of the United States as well as many foreign countries. She was a life long member of the Houlton United Methodist Church, past President of the Houlton United Methodist Women and taught Sunday School several years and served on many church committees. Mildred served with the Fidelity Chapter #32 and Lunar Chapter #126 Order of Eastern Star, past Matron Fidelity Chapter, District Deputy Grand Matron of District #19 for 2 years, Grand Electa of the Grand Chapter of Maine from 1949-50, Worthy Grand Matron of Maine from 1961-62, Chairman of the Arrangements for the annual session of the Grand Chapter of Maine for 3 years, Chairman of International Temple Committee of General Grand Chapter 1976-79 and was “Special Friend” to the Most Worthy Grand Matron from 1994-97. She was past President of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce, past Chairman of the Houlton Retail Trade Board, past President of the Abnaki Girl Scout Council Northern District from 1962-65, past District Director for District VI, Business Professional Women, past President of Houlton Garden Club and a member of the Houlton Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Mildred worked as a secretary for 7 years at Agricultural Conservation Association. At age 44, she fulfilled her dream of owning her own store. She purchased Bither’s Ladies Shop in 1965 and operated it for 30 years until her retirement in 1995. Mildred served many loyal customers from Fort Kent to Bangor, Canada and beyond. She looked forward to every day she went to work. Mildred is survived by her special niece Jane Webb Weston and her husband Charles of Hampden, children Aaron Weston and Jennifer Therrien, their spouses and children; several other much loved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; two sisters-in-law Norma Bither and Virginia Bither. She was predeceased by her parents Maurice and Beryl (Stewart) Bither, husband Herschel McIntosh, her sisters Mary Webb and Erma Barton, her brothers Philip Bither, Preston Bither, Willis Bither, John Bither, Hartley Bither, Wendell Bither and Carl Bither |
