He was selected to play on the Air Force football team and was credited with securing the team’s victory in the 1952 Pacific Coast Championship. After being honorably discharged in 1956, Andy traveled to Atlanta, Georgia and enrolled in Morris Brown College. Andy led the Morris Brown College football team as quarterback from 1957 to 1959 and was captain in 1959. He played every game over his three years on the team and was selected for the Atlanta World All-American Team in 1959, the All-City teams (1957 to 1959), and was one of the first Black men to be featured on the front cover of the sports section of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper. Andy, a lifelong Wolverine supporter and advocate, is enshrined in the Morris Brown College Athletic Hall of Fame. While attending Morris Brown College, he met his sweetheart, Atlanta native, Brenda Cox, who attended Clark College. The two dated during their senior year of college and courted for a few more years before marrying in 1965. The couple moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where they would eventually welcome daughters Meika and Margo to the world. A 1960 graduate with a degree in biology-chemistry, Andy accepted an opportunity to work as a chemist at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and subsequently as a cancer researcher at Temple University’s Medical School. He later joined Merck and fueled the entry of African American executives into Fortune 500 companies. Andy rapidly ascended the Merck corporate ladder and earned promotion to Administrator, and garnered research management awards and recognition for the company. Intent on his success and committed to lifelong learning while at Merck, Andy earned a degree from the Wharton Graduate School of Management at the University of Pennsylvania. He also attended LaSalle University, Temple University, and Pennsylvania State University for various certifications. |
