About | World War II veteran US Army 29 Jun 1943 to 2 Nov 1945 Mr. Arnold Norman Fleagle, 76, a well-known Frederick educator who resided at 108 Linden Ave., died there Thursday, Sept. 5, following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Ruth Rebecca Penner Fleagle, whom he married Aug. 17, 1944. Born in Hagerstown, March 25, 1920, Mr Fleagle was a son of the late Joseph R. and Beulah I. Bohn Fleagle. Mr. Fleagle graduated cum laude from Western Maryland College and Teachers College, where he was a member of the Honor Society. He received his master's degree from Columbia University in 1950. He was a teacher, vice principal and acting principal at Frederick High School. From 1958 to 1978 he was principal of Walkersville High School. He served as president of the Frederick County Secondary Principals Association, and served on the ethics committee of the Maryland State Teachers Association, was chairman of the Middlestates Secondary Schools Evaluating Committees for schools in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He also served as president of the Frederick County Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Fleagle served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army with the 32nd Infantry Division and the 6th Army 3rd Amphibian Assault Group in the Southwest Pacific area during World War II. He toured two seasons as a baritone with the 'Gospel Charioteers' quartet. He was a Sunday school teacher and elder at the First Church of God, Hagerstown, and then a Sunday school teacher and deacon with the First Baptist Church of Frederick. Mr. Fleagle was a trombonist in the Keedysville Band, Hagerstown Civic Band, Hagerstown Symphony Orchestra, Yellow Springs Concert Band and the Harmony Cornet Band. He was a former member and officer of the Glade Valley Lions Club, sports director with the Frederick City Recreation Commission, and served as an officer and director of the Linden Hills Civic Association. He also enjoyed camping and traveling. Surviving besides his wife of 52 years are three children, Barry Kenneth Fleagle of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Paul Henry Fleagle and his wife Cindy of Frederick, and Jill Ruth Parker and her husband Dave of Romney, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Zachary Fleagle and his wife Christi, Jeb Colin Fleagle and Meghan Rebecca Fleagle, all of Frederick, and Marie Ruth Parker, Emily Kate Parker and Susan Jill Parker, all of Romney; one brother, Robert Fleagle and his wife Martha of Hagerstown; a sister-in-law, Lettie Fleagle of Hemet, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Fleagle was preceded in death by two brothers, Roland Fleagle and Kenneth Fleagle. Mr. Fieagle is at the Frederick funeral home of Robert E. Dailey & Son, 1201 N. Market St., where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8. On Monday, Sept. 9, Mr. Fleagle will be moved to the First Baptist Church, 217 Dill Ave., Frederick, where he will repose from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at which time services will begin. His pastor the Rev. Dr. Larry L. Eubanks and the Rev. Burnis D. Barrett, former pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. The family requests memorial donations be made in memory of Mr. Fleagle to the First Baptist Church Youth Fund, First Baptist Church, 217 Dill Ave., Frederick, Md. 21701.
