About | Barry Wayne Horner, age 77, near Legore, died Thursday, November 17, 2022 at his home following a brief illness. Born November 9, 1945 in Legore, he was the son of the late Clyde Reese Horner and Lillian I. Weddle Horner. He was the husband of Mary Ann Horner, his wife of 57 years. Barry was a 1963 graduate of Walkersville High School where he was remembered as an athlete, playing baseball and softball. He was a member of the Oak Hill Church of God. Barry was a sportsman, an avid hunter and fisherman, a member of the Woodsboro Bowmen enjoying archery, the New Oxford Gun Club and a life member of the North Carroll Rod and Gun Club where he shot trap, the Carlisle Rod and Gun Club and the York and Adams Fish and Game Club where he shot skeet and trap, and was a lifetime member of the Cresap Rifle Club. He was a self-taught guitar player and a member of the Monocacy River Boys playing with his brother Delmar. He and his wife worked at Trout's Market in Woodsboro. Barry joined the Frederick City Police in 1967 and was a firearms instructor where he was a top-shot numerous times and shot a perfect 100 PPC in the pistol course on qualification day. He retired in 1992 after 25 years of service and then worked for the Maryland Public Defenders office for 10 years. In addition to his wife he is survived by daughters, Melissa Moats and husband Tink and Melinda Horner; grandchildren Emily and Travis; adopted son, Mike Grimes; a brother, Rev. Fred Horner and wife Nancy and a sister-in-law, Carol Horner. He was predeceased by brothers, infant Ronnie, and Delmar and Gerald Horner. A funeral service will be held at Oak Hill Church of God, Legore, 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 21, with Pastor Mark Ginter officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, November 20 at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro.
