About | Charles H Kerchner August 2,1949, 1949-November 6, 2024 This is the life story of Charles Kerchner, affectionately known as Charlie to many, husband, Dad to 3, son, brother, but most importantly, Pop Pop by his nine grandchildren. Charles' story began in Frederick, MD on August 2, 1949 born to Howard and Gertrude (Claggett) Kerchner. He was soon joined by a younger sister, Myra Kerchner. He and Myra had a very close relationship and he took great pride in being her big brother. He also had another sister, Kay Summers whom he also loved dearly. He graduated from Walkersville High School in MD and met the love of his life, Linda, marrying his bride on September 6, 1969, and together had three children. Charles lived the majority of his life in Orrtanna, PA. Charles moved all over the country and around the world with his military family. This began his love for serving his country, one day following in his father's footsteps enlisting in the United States Air Force. He served for 21 years, spending four years on active duty and 17 as a member of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. While he was incredibly proud of his service to our country, he never bragged or wanted recognition. After a long career in the military and government work, he went into food service, working many years at the Dobbin House in Gettysburg, PA, which held a very special in his heart. He loved the people, the work, and his years there. After retiring for real, he and his wife, Linda enjoyed the remainder of their days together. He became Linda's caretaker when she was diagnosed with Alzheimers. He made caring for her his mission and he did so with love and tenderness that many would not be able to do. Charles' absolute pride and joy were his grandchildren and being their Pop Pop! He loved to sit and talk with them, telling them stories about growing up. As his grandkids grew up, he loved when they'd spend special time with him. Nothing filled him with more pride than hearing of the incredible things they were doing. Before it was grandkids, Charles' had such an absolute dedication to whatever it was his kids were doing. He rallied and supported them in all things. One thing was sure, he loved his family dearly. In contrast to his military service, he took any & every opportunity to brag on his children and grandchildren and the things they had done and accomplished. If you were a friend of Charlie's, you were a friend indeed. He loved spending time getting to know people and enjoyed the company of them immensely. Charles was never quite the same after his bride, Linda paved the way to heaven before him. He lost the light in his life. There were other loved ones who went and paved the way to heaven before him. His father, Howard and mother, Gertrude were the first to depart this earthly life, along with his sister, Kay Summers. He will forever be missed by his sons, Chad Kerchner and daughter-in-law, Carla, of Hershey; Justin Kerchner and daughter-in-law, Chari, of Chincoteague, VA; his daughter, Angie Rhinehart and son-in-law, Jaret, of Penn Valley, PA, his grandchildren Colton, Gabriel, Paige, Caitlyn, Grant, Jonas, Caleigh, Emma, and Grace; sister Myra and many cousins and friends. Charles departed this earthly life surrounded by family and peacefully passed from their loving hands earthside to those of his wife and parents. Charles will be remembered best for what he left in this world. The memory of his three healthy children; his nine amazing grandchildren; the stories told and untold of his family's heritage, travels around the world as a military brat and as a MSgt in the Air Force, his advice for facing life's challenges, and his devotion to family A memorial service will take place at a later date to be announced in the future.
