About Claude H. "Sonny" Barrick III, of 9518 Stauffer Road, Walkersville, died Saturday, Aug. 7, at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 53.
He graduated from Walkersville High School in 1964, where he was a four-letter athlete. He was a member of the Walkersville High School 1964 state champion basketball team and held the Frederick County high school pole-vaulting record for more than 20 years.

Mr. Barrick attended Randolph Macon Academy, Front Royal, Va., from 1964 to 1965, where he played basketball and baseball. He then attended University of Maryland, College Park, where he played baseball and basketball, and was a member of the track team as a pole vaulter, before graduating in 1968.

He was a member of the 1963 and 1964 Frederick American Legion baseball teams. He played in the Maryland State Baseball League with New Market and the Tri-County Baseball League with Walkersville and Creagerstown. For many years, he had the opportunity to work with the youth of Glade Valley area as a baseball and basketball coach with the Glade Valley Athletic Association and the county all-star teams.

He was the husband of Sharon Kay Stauffer Barrick. They were married for 31 years.

Born April 8, 1946, in Frederick, he was a son of the late Claude H. Jr. and Sarah L. Baish Barrick.

He served with the 698th Supply Co., U.S. Army Reserves, Frederick, from 1968 to 1974.

After graduating from college, Mr. Barrick was employed as plant manager of the family business, S.W. Barrick and Sons Lime Co., Woodsboro, until retiring in 1988. During this time, he was also a part-time real estate agent with his father-in-law, George C. Stauffer of Stauffer Realty, Frederick, and as an insurance agent by Claude H. Barrick Insurance Agency, Woodsboro.

In 1990, he began Barrick and Sons Lawn Service, Walkersville, which his sons continue to operate today.

He was a member of Walkersville Volunteer Fire Co. 11; Glen W. Eyler American Legion Post 282, Woodsboro; and Ten Friends Hunt Club.

Mr. Barrick was an avid New York Yankees fan, hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed gardening, landscaping and country dancing.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Troy H. and Chad J. Barrick, and Jason P. Barrick and wife Michelle, all of Walkersville; two sisters, Kathryn S. Kelly and husband Edmund of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Dorothea L. Barrick of Woodsboro; two nephews, Sean H. Kelly of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Marcus W. Folger of Gettysburg, Pa.; one great-niece; and two great-nephews.

Mr. Barrick will also be remembered by his son Troy's friend, Kelly Hewitt of Walkersville; and his son Chad's fiancee, Jennifer Lewis of Walkersville.

Mr. Barrick was preceded in death by one nephew, Alexander P. Folger.
